WHAT TO BRING

Required

Valid Texas Parks and Wildlife Fishing License with Saltwater Stamp.

Fly Rod(s) and Leaders

Since it can get quite breezy here in south Texas, a 9-foot 8wt with a weight forward floating line is the standard set up. On calmer days or if you’re an experienced caster, a 7wt or even a 6wt can be a great rod to bring since they deliver a more subtle presentation. I have a great selection of guest rods as well.

Pre-made tapered leaders or stepped down tied leaders should be at least 9 feet in length. I’ve been tying my own using a 5’ foot butt section of 40lb mono, a 2’ mid-section of 25lb mono and 2’ fluorocarbon tippet of 16lb all tied with blood knots.

Clothing

The South Texas sun can be brutal, so a long-sleeved shirt with a hoodie or buff and long pants (recommended) can save you from getting a severe sunburn and keep the occasional horsefly at bay.

  • Polarized fishing glasses

  • Hat with dark under-brim

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Stripping basket of choice. I also have options.

  • Sun gloves

  • Finger stripping guard

  • Booties

  • Sunblock

  • Rain Jacket

  • Sweater/Jacket-Depending on the season.

Fish Bag

I am a huge proponent of the CPR (Catch, Photograph, and Release) of any fish we bring to hand but not averse to keeping a limit of Black Drum for some fresh fillets to take home.

However, we must be good stewards of our waters; if you are looking for a multi-species meat haul, I’m not the guide for you.

As the legendary Beach Fishing guide Capt. Billy Sandifer said, “If we don’t leave any, there won’t be any.”

Flies

There are many, many flies that work well for our Redfish and Black Drum but here are a few I typically have in my box:

Clouser.JPG

Clousers

White/Chartreuse and White/Pink with weed-guard.  Weighted, Bead-chain through medium dumbbell. Sizes 2-6

IMG_0124.JPG

Crabs

Any variation with weed-guard. Weighted XSmall dumbbell to medium dumbbell. Sizes 1-4.

EP Spawning Shrimp.JPG

Shrimp

Any variation with weed-guard. Weighted, XSmall dumbbell to medium dumbbell. Sizes 1-4

If you like to tie your own flies, get creative! If you don’t tie, I have a fully stocked box so don’t drop a lot of $$ on
shop-purchased flies.

I supply water and lunch. You can bring any snacks or beverages you prefer, but no Bananas!
